Elijah Teter

Over the past 30 years, Elijah Teter has done it all in snowboarding and has done so with excellence. Formerly a professional snowboarder and member of the US Snowboard team, Elijah went on to be a highly successful Olympic coach, helping to secure three gold and two silver medals while working with athletes such as Ayumu Hirano, Kaitlyn Farrington, Louie Vito, Hannah Teter, and Kazu Kokubo.

From Elijah: “In simplicity we are able to obtain the highest accomplishments because we know the cause of any issue on the mountain and our explanations are always adjusted accordingly.”

Athlete, Coach & Instructor Testimonials:

What makes Mike better than most of the coaches or athletes ,(who also understand the rotations and the mechanics) is that he is able to explain them with words and break them down into progressions. He can make you work on the progression of a complex trick step by step so you can work your way up slowly to achieve your goal.

-Athlete, Olympic & X Games Medalist Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, Canada

He doesn’t over complicate the training, he gets to the solutions too little and big issues very quickly. He is incredibly positive without being unrealistic. When Mike left the NZ Snow Sports field, New Zealand lost a valuable resource for the freestyle snowboarding and skiing community. We have completely changed the way we deliver our coaching plan. I have changed the way I have been coaching as a result of Mikes teachings.

Working alongside Elijah, I have learned so many valuable tools to help me further as a snowboard coach. Snowboarding is as much mental as it is strapping in and performing on snow. There are so many drills that one can do without even being strapped into a snowboard. As Elijah has said before; a great snowboarder can ride any board, any stance, anywhere. Being able to ride both regular and switch is a must. Taking a warm up run regular is great for starting the day off but taking runs switch is just as important. I have learned that whatever an athlete can do regular, it is just as important to be able to do switch.

Elijah is someone who truly understands snowboarding and the mental aspect of being an athlete. Since he has been a top level himself, he has great knowledge and is constantly learning and challenging himself as a coach. He really pays attention to the athlete’s body, mind, and of course their individual goals. He is one of the best I have ever worked with ever.

-Athlete, 5 Time X Games Medalist, Louie Vito, USA

Elijah’s Coaching helps get me closer to my dream, he understands me and coaches in a way that most beneficial for my style.
-Athlete, Two Time Olympic Silver Medalist, Ayumu Hirano, JAPAN

Over the past couple of years I have gotten to work with Elijah as my coach, I feel like we always made sure it was FUN on the mountain but in the end would get sh*t done! Its been a blast being able to work with him and I can’t wait for the seasons to come!
-Athlete, Olympic Gold, Kaitlyn Farrington, USA

With decades of experience in Development and FIS level training, he showed me how to identify incorrect skiing movement using simple visual cues. I learned many useful verbal commands using keywords or key phrases, which facilitated on-hill instruction. I was able to efficiently train and evaluate an initially large number of athletes based on criteria such as whether the athlete possesses a work-hard- will-payoff attitude, unwavering mental toughness, consistent physical prowess, ability to perform under judgment/pressure, and fast learning speed. On day to day training regiment, they demonstrated that setting the right training environment has everything to do with building the correct, long-lasting skiing techniques.

Years of experience and knowledge, which gave him abilities to quickly develop competence and generate results for the athletes. Excellence coaching skills and being resourceful helped each individual athlete and the team gain solid training foundation, and great team performances in races. Highly dedicated to the project, athletes and the staff. Delivered results in relatively short period of time, yet lots of potentials and possibilities to be realized. Straight forward.

Mike has not only helped me with my technical development which I now am proud to say I am recognised as one of the best in the world but how to approach athletic development as a whole. Any chance I have to talk with or work along side Mike I have taken and will continue too in the future no matter what industry I am in when the opportunity arises. I am proud to have Mike as a mentor and also a close friend

-Chinese National Halfpipe Team Coach, Brad Prosser

The funny thing about the way Mike Hanley taught me to spin on the trampoline and spot is I had no idea I was doing doubles when I progressed to them. It all felt smooth and risk free, that help me keep my nerves at bay while on the tramp. I was lucky enough to work with Hanley on snow as well as tramp. On snow we talked about how once your take off is perfect everything else will fall into place (in the air and the landing). I have a lot of respect for Mike Hanley and think that he’s one of the best coaches in the world. Mike understands that athletes are human and has a great sense of how and when to push people.

-Australian National Slopestyle/Big Air Snowboard Team, Matthew Cox

Mike not only knew the technical aspects of the freeride discipline, but also of inverted aerials. Both of these aspects are used in mogul skiing. Mike's knowledge was multifaceted and well rounded. He was very good at pushing you as an athlete as well. He would have you try all sorts of maneuvers so you would be a well rounded athlete. As a coach he pushed me to do all sorts of tricks on all different axises as well as both directions, which is not common for a mogul skier to do. Not only was he good at pushing you he was really good about making sure you had style to your skiing. He had me perform all sorts of grabs in my tricks. As an athlete I wanted to make sure that I stood out and Mike had helped me put creativity into my runs. I would like to thank Mike for teaching me these skills as I still use what I learned from him today. I use multiple of his techniques or cues when coaching my own athletes with there aerial maneuvers. Also now that grabs are more prevalent in mogul skiing today I have a good knowledge of how they are supposed to be executed because of the training I had been through. As well as how to make my team stand out. Mike was willing to help anyone out. A lot of these kids ended up on the US Ski Team. Not only from disciplines of Freeskiing, but also those from a moguls background as well as aerials. All of which would vouch for Mikes kindness and generosity. If not for my own persistence and determination, I probably would not have made it as far as I had in my sport without help from great coaches like Mike Hanley, whom helped push me along the way.

-Joe Discoe German Olympic/US Team Mogul Team Coach
